Devotional:

Happy Day 10 everybody! When I heard the fasting theme was “Treasure Hunters” the first thing I thought of, was Indiana Jones. When I was a boy, I loved Indiana Jones! I would play outside as Indiana Jones and pretend that I would look for treasure or ancient artifacts. Oftentimes I would grab my Indy style fedora, my dad’s leather jacket and I’d run outside looking for treasure. I would look for treasure under rocks, under logs, everywhere! Unfortunately thought, all my seven year old self ever found was dirt, leaves and acorns. Not quite the treasure I was hoping for. I was seeking treasure, but all I found was a bunch of junk. It got me thinking. During these 21 days, “What is the reason for my fast? Why am I seeking God? What am I seeking God for?” Sadly there have been times in my life where I was fasting for the wrong reasons. I would fast just to show off, just to do it, or just to say that I was fasting. When fasting for the wrong reasons, truth be told, I missed what God wanted to do in my life! I was fasting for the wrong reasons, seeking spiritual treasure, but finding nothing but junk. Just like I had as a boy. ALL to my own fault. I wasn’t seeking after God at a deeper level, and because of that, I missed out on what God wanted to speak to me. There were times when I would be frustrated, as to why God wasn’t speaking, or revealing something to me, when truth be told, it was my own fault! I wasn’t seeking out of the right heart. BUT, once the Lord spoke to me about my heart posture, and I made a change, I was finding spiritual treasures all over the place! In God’s word, in my prayer time, and in other people. When I corrected my mindset, the Lord spoke. Psalm 34:10 says, “The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.” This can be a perfect reminder for us! That as we fast (with the right heart), we lack nothing. God provides for us as we seek Him. We may feel weak physically, and we may all be really hungry (can I get an Amen?), but because we have our hearts set on God, we lack no good thing. Because WE as a church are seeking God, we lack no good thing. When we seek after Him, we WILL find that spiritual treasure that God has for us, and that’s WAY better than any treasure Indiana Jones could ever find.

Questions:

What is the reason for your fast?

What has God been speaking to you through this fast so far?

Do you feel you have the right heart during these 21 days?

Prayer:

Dear God I thank you for this fast. God I thank you for this time we can start our year by setting our hearts on you, and drawing close to you. Lord we’re so thankful for all you’ve done in our lives. Lord I pray that as we draw close to you this fast that you would draw close to us. God that our minds and hearts would be set on you, and that as we fast, that it would be out of a right mindset, and a right heart. Lord I pray that as we seek you this fast that we would find the spiritual treasure that you have for us. God we’re so thankful for who You are. May your will be done in me through the remainder of this fast, In Jesus Name, Amen.
